The Sport of Soils

Did you know that time outdoors is linked to positive effects on physical health? A strain of bacterium in soil, Mycobacterium vaccae, has been found to trigger the release of serotonin, which in turn elevates mood and decreases anxiety. Protecting the places where we recreate is important to our health and our livelihood. Soils are the foundation for our national forests, our hiking trails, our playing fields, volleyball courts, baseball fields, and many of outdoor areas we enjoy. Proper management of recreational areas is important to minimize the negative impacts of erosion. So, get outdoors and play! Thank the soil for providing us with the foundation to enjoy the natural world.
